Psychonephrology receiving wider focus
We are glad to share with you that Psychonephrology was recently featured in a podcast titled “Psychonephrology: A Psychodynamic Perspective in the Dialysis Unit”, part of the recently launched IPA Off the Couch series. Listen to the conversation between Dr. Harvey Schwartz, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College in Philadelphia and executive producer of the podcast, and Dr. Gavril Hercz, a practicing nephrologist and psychotherapist, at the Humber River Hospital in Toronto, Canada.
Dr. Hercz will describe how he had brought his psychoanalytic sensitivities to his work in nephrology and in dialysis units. This has been especially helpful in appreciating the stressful transition period when patients first begin their dialysis treatment. Although our medical system is well equipped to deal with the many physical aspects of illnesses, the psychological aspects are often overlooked. Listen as he describes the innovative models of care initiated at his hospital, in an effort to integrate the psychosocial and physical aspects of illness, focusing not just on patients but also on families and clinicians.
