There are many treatment options available for kidney patients, including choosing not to purse a kidney transplant or dialysis. Conservative care can eventually evolve to increased palliative care needs, with a wish for less medical interventions or a decrease in medications.
The aim of conservative care would be:
- To prevent and treat any symptoms
- To protect and maintain the remaining kidney function
- Planning for the future
Preferring conservative care over dialysis/kidney transplant does not indicate that the patient has lost the desire to live or he/she has suicidal tendencies. Thus, after the patient’s death, the family’s insurance claim can’t be denied for choosing conservative care. This decision is often taken in consultation with your kidney team and family members.
